School's Out! (Ode to Second Grade)

I can hardly believe the school year is over for Ella, and I am feeling a sense of freedom and excitement that's probably equal to the way I felt during my own school years.  I keep jumping up and down in my mind the freedom is so intoxicating.

Second grade, you were great.  I don't know about Ella, but my favorite part was the history this year.  I am a huge stickler for starting at the beginning of things.  Is there a preface to this book?  I should read it.  Does this TV show have 50 seasons?  I should definitely start at the beginning to understand the whole backstory.  So, starting at the beginning with the first civilizations was right up my alley, and I loved our history book. Reading history aimed for children is so much easier to understand. I loved filling in the gaps of all those events floating around in my head.  This year we started with Mesopotamia and ended with the fall of the Roman Empire.

Ella made huge jumps in Math this year.  We started with reviewing basic addition and subtraction and moved through subtracting 4-digit numbers, re-grouping (though we always called it borrowing in my day), multiplication, and solving equations.  She's really done a great job.

It has been a year of reading for my little girl.  She embraced chapter books last April and never looked back.

In Science we learned about the different animals that live on all the continents, about our bodies and how they work, and about the mysteries of Space.  It's been a good year.

  1. You should submit some of your school pictures to Sonlight. Maybe they'll include them in their catalog!

    1. That's a fun idea! Although most of the time I snap pictures with my phone, so the quality isn't too great, but maybe that wouldn't matter in a small print.
